Berwyn Heights Police Department on Racial Profilingi

The issue of discrimination based on racial profiling is a visable and sensitive topic.
Racial profiling has received widespread media attention in our community and across the country.
Treating a person differently soley because of ethnicity is wrong and the Berwyn Heights
Police Department does not tolerate such conduct by our officers.
We do not condone or allow racial profiling or discrimination.

The Berwyn Heights Police Department has no past, present or pending legal claims alleging racial profiling.
No complaints of this nature have ever been received by us.

The public expects us to be proactive in identifying those who break the law.  It is our duty, as law enforcement
officers, to look for suspicious behavior that alerts us to criminal activity based on our training and experience.
Stops of citizens, traffic related and otherwise, are based upon that behavior, and not on ethnic background.
Our mission statement dictates to each and every officer that all citizens, from the law abiding to the
law breaking, deserve to be treated with dignity, fairness and equality.

Berwyn Heights Police Officers are selected following stringent hiring policies.  Our officers receive outstanding
training and understand what is expected of them.  The Berwyn Heights Police Department does not tolerate
discriminatory practices and our employees understand the consequences of this behavior.

Many citizens are unaware that police academies incorporated diversity training into their recruit and in-service
training curriculums several years ago.  These curriculums include instruction in understanding and
respecting people of different races and cultures, with the main emphasis on preventing discrimination.

We have taken an oath to uphold the laws and to protect the constitutional rights of our citizens.
We recognize that the trust of the public is invaluable and we will earn that trust every day through each contact.
We pledge to continue to uphold the rights of all people to be treated equally.
